A HIdden Gem in the Santa Ynez Valley

Founded by the Gleason family in 2004, Refugio Ranch Vineyards produces terroir-driven wines that capture the rugged beauty and complexity of its Santa Ynez Valley estate vineyard. With a focus on red and white Rhône varieties, along with Sauvignon Blanc and Petite Sirah, Refugio Ranch reflects a deeply personal commitment to the land, shaped by two generations of the Gleason family, and the thoughtful winemaking of Max Marshak.

The Land

Refugio Ranch is a 415 acre former cattle ranch, nestled into the north face of the Santa Ynez Mountains, with the Santa Ynez River serving as the northern property line. In 2006 the Gleason family planted a select 28 acres of the ranch to vineyards. All of our vineyards are farmed and harvested by hand, with a focus on low yields and concentration of fruit. The majority of the estate is unplanted, allowing for a spaciousness and natural, rugged beauty that is quintessential Santa Ynez Valley.

Los Olivos Tasting Room

In Nov. 16, 1887, the Pacific Coast Railway extension from Los Alamos to Los Olivos was completed, officially putting Los Olivos “on the map.” Passengers and cargo traveled the narrow gauge railroad to points north as far as San Luis Obispo until the train made its last run in 1934. The southern terminus of the railroad was in front of nearby Mattei’s Tavern, where a stagecoach line continued over San Marcos Pass into Santa Barbara. Our corner, where the Refugio Ranch Tasting Room is now located, was reputedly the original ticket booth and fueling depot for the Pacific Coast Railway.
